Muse - Uprising

Remember last week when I told you that music was poetry? It was no joke! This week I want you to choose a video to watch and study the lyrics of. You get to pick the video - this is not categorized by hour! After you watch the video, I want you to talk about what you think the song means in the comments section. You can respond to what other people have said or ask them questions about their responses.

Something to keep in mind - when you say what you THINK the song means, you need to be able to back it up with evidence. So in addition to saying what you think the meaning is, you also have to tell me why you think that. Have fun!

  1. I think that at the time the author was writing this song he must have felt like we were all being controlled. And probably thought that something or someone was trying to push us to the bottom and putting themselves to the top. Maybe he's talking about the government? I think this because in the song he states that "They will force us, they will stop degrading us, they will not control us,we will be victorious. To me that sounds like he's really mad at someone or something that must have done something to his life or someone that he cares about.

  4. I thought the part that says "They'll try to push the drugs that keep us all dumbed down/And hope that we will never see the truth around" was interesting. It's almost as though the author is saying that we're being controlled and aren't even capable of thinking for ourselves. What could the "drugs that keep us all dumbed down" be? Junk food? Television? Lies the government tells us? This guy almost sounds like a conspiracy theorist, doesn't he?

    1. Those lyrics make me think of medications doctors put us on for problems, like for mental problems or depression and stuff like that.

  5. i agree with Cody i think the government is the bosses and the song is telling us to rebel and make decisions for our selves and not be fed these lies and hear the whole truth and not be little kids in the dark.
this song says that the writer is fed up on something whether its lies or something else they put there feelings into words and it tells us rise up and hear the truth the whole truth.

    1. i agree with both u and mrs.boehle because its all kinda weird how he all makes it feel like a terroist, and that the goverment should be in controol of the rebels,! but it is verry contolling song and as a poet for him i think hes mad at somebody or a groud of people because the is saying..... "FIGHT" every once in a while, and "we will be victorous" and are they talking about the drug cartell? who will not controol you. "fat cat had a hard attack" is another intrtesting quote.

  6. In this song, I think that the meaning is that there is a group of people of which the singer is a part of that are getting push around by other people being told what to do. then the singer is telling us threw the courus that thier not going to let the happen and that thier going to stand up. this is why i think this song is called uprising because thier wanting to fight back. evidence that proves this is when the song says " they'll try do push drugs that keep us all down and hope that we don't see the truth around." this shows me that there's the group of bad enforcers. then the song states " they will not force us, they will stop degrading us, then will not control us, we will be victorious." this shows me the other group is fighting back to be free.

  7. i think it might be about the world/government covering up/hiding stuff from use as the first couple verses i think its talking about for intense crime seems and being drudged to not think stuff they should not be able to control us like that i don't agree that they control us but i think it might be about being drafted into the war and being forced to do stuff. like in the song part 3:50 they are repeating fight as in the government is telling us to fight without a word of say.

  8. I think the author wanted to say the government holds too much power over us and should have less power and he is angry about all their power and saying we should stop all this and fight for ourselves and to not take all there “shots”. He thought they are to powerful and are like the bosses of us they make people believe it is a free country but they control everything around us.

  9. I think that this song is talking about is that this guy is mad about something and he is trying to cover it up. I also think that he is getting controlled by something or someone so he is mad about that. He even say " they can not controll us they can not force us"

  10. The song demonstrates how the goverment keeps secrets from us and makes life seem so good in the states but how their also controlling us with good things and covoring up the truth behind anything that would send us into turmoil even if us the people wanted to hear the truth.

  12. I think this song is talking about how he feels like we're trapped & caged in & he wants us to break free. He talks about the government, and what i think he's mad about that is because they keep secrets and don't tell us everything we need to know, and he is sick and tired of it & he doesn't want to fell controlled, he doesn't want to fell like he can't do something about it.

  13. To me this song is all about the government, how they seem to control us and edit things the public sees so we don't know the truth, plus how they make laws stating what we can and can not do. What makes me think this is that some of the lyrics are "Push drugs that keep us all dumbed down, and hope that we will never see the truth around". The lyrics "about time those fat cats had a heart attack" makes me think of movies where there's some fat evil guy controlling a town or country and then the people there rebel for their freedom and such, like when America rebelled against Britain and caused the Revolutionary War.

  14. i think that the song is saying that people try and take over everything and they want us to think and act the same way but they wont let them get in there heads. i think this because it always says "they will not control us, we will be victorious"

  15. I think this song is mostly about how the government tried to control all of us and forces all the citizens to do bad stuff. The artist was also trying to tell us that the government has to much force over us.I also think that the artist was involved in drugs. My evidence for this is that it said that they need to keep the drugs moving. My evidence for that the government has to much power and forces us to do thing It said several times that they can not force us. The figurative Language was bomb bomb and other different sounds. This would be called onomatopoeia.
