Black Eyed Peas - Where is the Love?

Remember last week when I told you that music was poetry? It was no joke! This week I want you to choose a video to watch and study the lyrics of. You get to pick the video - this is not categorized by hour! After you watch the video, I want you to talk about what you think the song means in the comments section. You can respond to what other people have said or ask them questions about their responses.

Something to keep in mind - when you say what you THINK the song means, you need to be able to back it up with evidence. So in addition to saying what you think the meaning is, you also have to tell me why you think that. Have fun!

  1. i think that this song means that people in the usa and around the world are getiing abused, killed, hurt and some people do hear them cry and they care that they ae crying.. to support that is in the song it says "people killing eachother, people dying and kids get hurt and you hear them".

  2. I agree. I think this song is saying that we are killing our own kind, instead of loving our own kind. I think this beacause in the song it mentions how there is a war going on and we dont even know what we are fighting about. I think the Black Eyed Peas were mad about how selfish we are and that we shyould be nicer to each other.

  3. What I noticed in the song is that instead of descriminating about others and there race you should have love and so what they are saying is that if you dont have love then bad stuff will happen like people getting killed and just people getting there fellings hurt in general.
    GO BLACK EYED PEAS!!!

  6. when i listened to this song i thought that they were trying to say that disacriminating against other people happens alot these days and that people only put others down. and that we need to spread love and cheer on the people of today. Lots of bad things are happening to the youth of today because of gangs and terrorism. But if we spread love and don't make others feel bad we can really have a good and happy world

  8. what i think is that people only care about them and only them and that we should start caring about other people and not just you and only you the reason why i know that is that in the song it says people killing people dying so that is why we should start taking car of people and other things

    1. I agree. People these days could care less about poor people living on the side of the street, as long as they have mansions and nice cars.

  9. I think that this song means that everyone should stop hating on each other. That we are all living here in one "world" and that we should stop hating everyone and just love each other. As it says in the song, " when you only hate you're bound to irate," saying just stop hating!

  10. You guys are doing a great job with this one! I thought the lines "I think the whole world addicted to the drama/Only attracted to things that'll bring you trauma" says a lot about our society. I think about all of the "reality" TV that's out there, and all of it is about drama and being in each other's business negatively. I wish reality TV would show people helping each other or working to understand each other better. Shows like "16 and Pregnant" and "Jersey Shore" and "Real Housewives of..." just showcase greed, stupidity and sad situations. I'd like to see a show that's more positive and about building good, solid relationships!

  11. I think the song means that we need to make this world a better one because all the things that are going on such as: terrorism, racism, bullying, and abuse. the song tells me this because it says "But if you only love your own race then you only leave space to discriminate." That there shows that we should STOP racism not keep doing it. We have so much technology now that kids want to play indoors because that were all the outlets are then the kids act they way the people do on the television or games the play or watch. in the song it says "Infecting the young minds faster than bacteria." Abuse and Murdering is another thing brought up in this song. Part of the lyrics say "People hurt people dying children hurt and you hear them crying" basically say people are killing others and abusing to and you might hear them but you don't do anything. The very end of the song it states you only got one world. that tells me that we need to fix our only world, if we don't fix it now we will have a hard time finding food or doing anything without being hurt, abused, jumped, robbed.

  12. This song is a good one to pick because it means to make the world a better place and not to make the world a bad place. So i see when they go to the different verse they rhyme and they sound good. and it has a lot of fig. language in it and that is what makes the song sound good and it keeps its rhythm. But when they but all together they make the song and that's poetry.

  13. I agree with about everyone because as the song says "we only got one world" so i thought lets not have all this grief and make it a good place. Another thing i seen is "practice what you preach" basically says don't tell someone to do something then do exact opposite as that. When the song says "where is the love" I think its because of all the hurt and almost everyone is money hunger instead of sharing with others.

  14. The meaning of this story is when the artist was young he lived in the hood and all he knows is about the cribs, bloods and kkk fighting and shooting each other.I also think that when think that hen the artist was young his mom died because it said no mamas in the world and he had to grow up on the street and no one there for him or no one loving him.i think when it said terrorist i think that they were referring to 9-11.I think this also means was that we can not go any where with out felling safe and not getting shoot at or being jumped.

    1. My evidence for terrorist it says say that all the terrorist trying to come over seas and try to damage our world.I think that the terrorist are jealous of us and that is why they are trying to damage our country. My evidence why no one can be safe in this world is because we have all the gangs in the world and we do not know when they could try to attack us or jump us.

  15. Well, I think this song is pointing out all that is wrong with the world and that we need to stop what we are doing because the apple never falls far from the tree. It talked about war over the sea(Iran), terrorism and racism. then when it says "can you practice what you preach and would you turn your check" to me it means that people say you need to do something but they don't do that. then it talks about how today's youth is following the same path that has been set in front of them and we can't keep going at that pace. After that when it say " we only have one world" it is talking about the pollution going on and that it is hurt our homes and the lives of the people on earth.*

  16. I think the song is trying to point out all of the racism and that we need to do somthing fast before the whole race of the world just collapses ("I can feel the weight of the world on my shoulder") and as the song said, people are so selfish these days and they dont really care about anything or anyone... they would rather stay to them self than have anything to do with anyone.. I think that when he asks for help from his "father" he is telling us to join him and everyone else that has started helping and to unite together to help the world and population of the people and the world last longer !!

  17. i think that the song is about peapole around the world getting abused and peapole need to stand up and end the tradiges in the world and foucas on how much pain peapole are in i think this because this song is providing the words about how the world is not safe and there are still peapole hating on peapole and we are just spreading animosity witch i think is bad . and the world needs to be nicer and there is alwas gonna be bad things in live but you just have to help others and you will get helped.

  18. I think that they're saying the world is different now then what it used to be. There is more violence and not enough lovein the world! Now there's terroists living in the United States, theres more gangs and that people aren't very polite anymore. They are trying to send out the message to be more respectful and love the world more because there's only one, and when our world goes away we go away.

    2. i have to agree with both of u guys look at the killing rate in the United States it has gone up since the 1800's and stuff like that so yes i agree

  19. i think that the song is saying that every thing is different now that every one is fighting and terrorist are living in the usa and that people needs to start loving the world and putting peace ans love.

  20. I think this is about how the world used to be a nice place where everybody liked each other. Also it talks about how we kill without a reason other than getting a there money, and because you don't like that person. It also talks about how everbody lies to one another. One last thing I see is that it talks about how Pollution is killing children.

  21. I think that this song is about how these people are so sick of people fighting and all of the drama in this world. they are just trying to figure out where is all of the respect we used to have for eachother. they even say "where is the love" " i am so sick of this world right now."

  22. i think its about how we are so cruel to the other countries and when we bomb them they send terrosist to us!

  23. This song really just points out everything thats wrong with the world, and kind of helps people see that your life might seem perfect, but there are SO many people out there struggling to even have one meal a day. A line that really stuck out to me and that I remember from only listening to the song once is "When you only have love for your own race, then you only leave space to discriminate." This stuck out to me because I see it everyday at school. If you don't like everyone, then that means that you must not like some people. Overall it was a really cool song and kind of spoke to me:) It was seriously deep.

  24. I agree with all of the 26 comments. I listened to the song again and found out that this song is also telling us how different the world is. In the second verse it talks about nations dropping bombs. That is really what is happening and if we dont stop then we will just kill eachother and there will be no world to rule because we are destroying it. Then in the l last verse it says "we only got one world", and those are words of wisdon right there.

  25. I also agree with all the comments, they all hit it right on the spot. This song is not only a good song to listen to but also teaches you to bring back the LOVE.

  26. I so agree with this song, and even though this song is rap lots of people would not even give it a chance, and that's stupid. Evey one is different and we need to exseped it. Lot of people are asking why we are learning about bully again after we leaned if over and over again sense 3rd grade. Well this song tells us why. It tell us what is wrong, and what we can fix. The part that says "negative images is the main criteria affecting the young minds faster that Bactria" is only the truth. That how people start with all the crap that everyone has to hear about. The main thing that i got from this is that people are cruel and need to shut up, pay attention to reality, and stop being so selfish with there own popularity.

  27. I think that this song is saying that the world needs to be a better place. Also,I think this song is talking about how people treat each other poorly & that there isnt enough love spreading around. This song also talks about how kids/teenagers wanna act like what they see on t.v. and they don't wanna act like theirselfs and thats true. So, basically this song is about peace and how we need more love to be spreading around.

  28. i think that the there tyring to focus on how messed up this world is and not trying to look at what positives there are and mostly focus on people dieing in war but where fighting for our freedom and our protection from the gas bombs

  29. I think that this song is about what the world is coming to. Both the world and the people in this world are becoming worse and worse. People are becoming more rude, racist, and judgemental. Everything is just sorta going down hill... More shootings are happening in Peoria, more kids are getting bullied, suicide rates are going up, people are fighting about legalizing same sex marriage... nobody seems to get along anymore. In the song it said "Whats wrong with the world Mama? People livin' like they ain't got no Mama's." That is true. Moms are usually ther people to put you in your place and make you be the best that you can be, but it's not like that anymore. omething else that it said that was really meaningful to me was "But if you only have love for your own race then you only leave space to discriminate." That is so true.More and more people are discriminating other races. This morning on facebook i saw a status that said "Like if you're not racist". Those things just sound racist to say. I was looking at the comments and some of those people can be so rude... It's just not fair.

  30. I think that this song is talking about all the bad things that happen in our world and that since we only have one we should make it peaceful and try to eliminate all the bad things. I think this bnecause in the song it says "where is the love?" meaning why do all these bad things happen and why can't everyone just love each other. Also that people need to realize how much bad stuff happens to people that they probably dont even realize is going on around the world.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think that this song is about society, and how it's just gone downhill. With discrimination, criticism, drama, and all of our other problems. How not everyone is nice to each other and how some people make fun of, and judge people that are different from them. I agree with this song very much. Although this song is older, the society has clearly not gotten any better.
The song says, "If you only have love for your own race Then you only leave space to discriminate." That's pretty much saying that if you only like, and are friends with people that are like you- same skin color, hair color, life style, ect., then you'll most likely end up just discriminating people and being a bully who only likes people just like themselves.

  32. I think this song is about all of the bad things in the world & many people judging others. Plus, we should just except people for who they are or who we are. What i think it means when the black eyed peas say "Where is the love?" i think what they are saying is how there is no peace & everything's going bad. Also, i think they are saying why can't everyone just love each other & stop hating each other. Don't be jealous of each other & like who you are. Plus, people need to realize
how many wrong things are going on, & need to try to help stop it.

  33. think that they wonding why is the would the way it is like they is killing staling ect so they write this song wonding where is the love?

  34. i think this song is trying to send the messeage that people kill them selfs everyday or get abused of something they saw that wasnt true but people think it is. My evidence is that when it said "children hurt and you hear thm crying" it made me think of that because it happens in the world everyday.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think this song means that you shouldn't juddge any one by race, color, or religon or in other words don't bully or descriminate. I know this because in the song it states " if love and peace are strong, why are there pecies that don't belong?"

    ReplyDelete
  36. i think that this song is about people who only care about themselves and some people anround the world are getting abused tortured and killed and its true about us descriminating against eachother some people dont like black people and some people dont like white people....i dont understand why we have to treat eachother like this.......its not right for people to get hurt and some people can do something about it but they never do......they see it happen but just sit there and watch and dont tell nobody or even talk to them after it happens they just walk away like nouthing ever happened.this song means alot about this world because it explains on how stuff happens everyday and we can do something about it but we dont we never do anything about it...we just sit there instead of telling someone.....where is the love for other people....people that actually deserve it.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think this song is about people being judged and how bad the world is and how hurtful some people can be to others. Like when they say "Where is the love?" i think they are meaning that no one is really showing love anymore, everyone just hates each other in the world now.

    ReplyDelete
  38. THat kinda what i said:)But i like the way you worded it!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think this is about people being like murdered or hurt and then like only loving your own race instead of loving all of the races. then its talking about how we are all just letting more terrorists into the united states. then i think its also about how alot more kids have ben like bullying kids then them taking on so much sothey resort to suicide.

  40. This song reminds me of 9/11 and pearl harbor and iraq. For 9/11 it reminds me that when something happens we get stronger.Same thing with pearl harbor we unite as one country. Iraq is like trying to keep peace. No reason to try, talk it out. There is no reason for it.
