1st Hour - Week of 1-28-13

Εμπρός, tι κάνεις? That means "Hello, how are you?" in Greek and it's pronounced "Embrós, ti kánis?"

As you know, last week and this week we're focusing on words we use in everyday English that have Greek and Latin roots. You guys made some really helpful posters that are now hanging in the classroom, but in case you'd like to see a list of roots online, here's where I got the ones we used in class: https://www.msu.edu/~defores1/gre/roots/gre_rts_afx2.htm?...

If your root word isn't on that list, try looking it up on dictionary.com. I've found a few there that surprisingly weren't on our original list (like "trans" and "ad").

Something a few people have asked me since we started talking about Greek and Latin roots last week is if you're supposed to find words you don't know or words you do know. Either is fine. The goal is to find words you don't know that contain Greek or Latin roots and use your knowledge of the root word to help you figure out the meaning of the overall word. However, if you can't find a word that you don't know, but you spot a familiar root in a word you do know, you can use it for your assignment. Clear as mud? :)

If you have questions or need help figuring out if a word contains a Greek or Latin root word, just let me know! Διασκεδάζω (pronounced diaskedazo), or in other words, have fun! :)

  2. Book: Confeti Girl by Diana Lopez
on page 4 i read the word bibliophile in this sentence, "'besides' dad says, 'im a bibliophile. biblio remember, is the latin word for book, and a phile is the greek word for lover.'" this word didnt confuse me because it tells me what it means in the book. to figure it out i just re-read the sentence and put two and two together.

(Same Book) on page 6 i read the word staphylococcus in this sentence slash paragraph, " she was healthy, perfectly healthy, until she fell, cut her leg, and got a blood infection from something called staphylococcus" this word confused me because i had never hear the word before . to figure out what it meant i figured out that staph means a bunch of grapes so essentially, the infection clustered so there was a big mass. so staphylococcus is a blood wound that you usually get from a needle at the doctors office that makes the disease cluster and can kill you.

  3. Book: Skateboard Renegade
    Author: Matt Christopher

On page 74 I read the word Inject. In this sentence Zach Injected into the air after he hit a crack in the sidewalk.
This word confused me because I have usually heard the word Injected when you get a shoot at the doctors.
To figure this out, I went to our Latin root word wall and i figured out that it meant to go airborne or being throw-up. This made sense because he was being throw - up into the air.

    Book: Week in the Woods
    Author: Andrew Clements

On page 57 I read the word propel. In this sentence Mark was able to propel himself through the snow using his snowshoes.
This word confused me because I have only heard the word propel like the part of a boat motor.
To figure out what this meant, I went up to our Latin root word wall. I figured out that it meant to drive yourself. This made sense because he wanted to drive himself to get to the woods in his snowshoes.

  6. Book: Haddix: Sent
    Author:Margaret Peterson

On page 156 i read the word Telepathic. The sentence was " He waved his arms at her, trying to send a telepathic message....
i thought that i already knew what it meant, but i just wanted to make sure if i was right. To find out what it was i looked up at the posters first at Tele which means far, path means feeling. so tele-pathic means suffering far feeling of a suffering message.

In the same book on page 82 i read the word pyromanic, in the sentence " Thanks a lot! She went and hid somewhere else, somewhere safe and left me to deal with Mr. Pyromaniac 1483!
which i think pyromaniac means a person that uses fire a lot. what it actually means is a compulsion to set things on fire. so i was actually on the right track of what i thought it was and i found out what it meant on the dictionary.com website that mrs. boehle put up on her blog site.

  7. BOOK: LORD OF THE FLIES
    AUTHOR: WILLIAM GOLDING

On page 22 I read the word intensity in the sentence " There was a slight, furtive boy whom no one knew, who kept to himself with an inner intensity of avoidance and secrecy. This word confused me because I know the word intense means something is exciting, but that doesn't work in the sentence. To figure out what it meant, I Looked up the Greek/Latin root word "ten" and learned that intensity means to strain or hold something back.

in the same book on page 23 I read the word mortification in the sentence The freckles on Jack's face disappeared under a blush of Mortification. This word confused me because the only word I've ever seen close to this is multiplication and i would hate having two of this character. To figure out what it meant, I looked up the Greek/Latin root word "mort" and found out that the word mortification means to feel mortal again which makes sense because Jack thought he was high and mighty so he was shocked when they chose Ralph to be the leader.

  8. Book: The Necromancer ( the Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel )
    Author: Michael Scott
On page 240 there was the word subtle. I've seen the word before but I didn't know what it meant. Based on how the book used it ("you've never been able to pull off subtle, have you?") I figured out that it meant that if you can be subtle you can blind in and can easily work behind the scenes.
Then on page 275 I read the word ravenous in this sentence "she will be ravenous". At first I didn't know what it meant but then I read the paragraph around it to hind out. Based on that it means hungry and uncontrollable.
