I wonder if mother is worried about Mattie because Mattie and grandfather didn't make it to the farm but mother did. I also wonder if Mattie will keep Nell when mother finds out that she took her in.
I was so relieved when Mattie found Eliza...and I bet Mattie was relieved, too. It must have been so wonderful to find her right after her grandfather's sudden death.
It seems like her mom has been gone forever, but I wonder how long it's actually been. I haven't been paying attention to the dates at the beginning of each chapter.
i think mother would come back and get mattie if she new she was there but she doesnt know she was there so she might not unless eliza tells her mom that she is there
They mentioned in the book a couple times that the mail has stopped so there isn't really a way for Mother to find out about Mattie unless she was to come home, or someone was to go there and tell her.
Ok, I went back into my reading and saw that the last day Mattie saw her mom was on September 6th, and it is now September 28th, so it's been just over three weeks.
I thought it was hilarious! She was engaged to someone that her mother had chosen for her to marry, but she went behind her back and eloped with her French tutor? That's hilarious, and her mother was completely embarrassed over it. :)
We know she recovered from the fever enough to leave Philidelphia and go looking for Mattie, because Eliza told Mattie that she didn't die. It sounds like Mother went to the farm, but Mattie wasn't there.
When the old lady came out and was beating Mattie because she thought she had the fever I just wanted to slap her with her own cane and see how she'd like it. :l
Ha! :) I definitely wasn't a fan of that woman. I think the author included that part to show how scared and careful people have become. No one wants to get sick, so they're doing things they wouldn't normally do to protect themselves from the fever.
When I was reading Chapter 22 I was thinking about that webquest that you guys did before we read the book. They talked about Dr. Rush and the idea that African Americans couldn't get the fever (even though they could!), and the Free African Society. Those were all real things that we read about during that Webquest!
On page 185, Eliza says, "We are all better off together, that's what I think," which makes me think that, at least for the time being, Mattie is going to stay with Eliza instead of going back home.
At the end of Chapter 23, Eliza says she needs Mattie's help taking care of the sick. It doesn't sound like either of them are going to go looking for Mattie's mom. And, like Miss Mosher said, the mail isn't being delivered, so it's probably best if they stay in Philidelphia and wait for Mother to come back.
When Grandfather died I wonder if they put the picture of his wife on the grave in the grave or just threw it out. But it was funny when Mattie almost made that guy fall in the grave and grabbed him by his shirt and said "This was a great man, Captain William Farnsworth Cook, of the Pennsylvania Fifth Regiment. He was my grandfather. you will not bury him without a prayer!" she spoke slowly in an iron voice. and the man said "The lass is right" She was serious and it was also surprising and funny.
This is a part that really stuck out to me too. Mrs. Boehle pointed out earlier with the incident with the woman and the cane that people seem to be acting differently than they normally would because of the panic and fear of the fever. I thought it was interesting that when Mattie stood up to the guy and demanded that they give Grandfather a more proper burial that all of the people surrounding the area joined in on the prayer (on page 154). I think it shows that people were kind of losing themselves, and for a moment, Mattie kind of reminded them of who they used to be.
I agree with you, Miss Mosher. That part of the book made me happy, because it gave me hope that the people of Philadelphia have not completely lost themselves. That when the fever is over, people can start to rebuild their lives and be stronger.
At the end of chapter 23, on page 189-190, it says that Mother Smith can't help them anymore because she has to take care of a family with 8 children who just lost their mother. She doesn't seem to be related to Eliza at all - I think she's just an older lady who takes care of kids when their families fall ill.
I haven't completely finished reading Chapter 23, but this question definitely made me stop and think. I feel like she will stay with Eliza. Her life seems to have some structure there and she has always considered Eliza family. Even though Eliza has assured Mattie that her mother had recovered when she left for the farm, it still really sounds like Mattie isn't completely confident that her mother is still alive. It would be a risk to travel all the way to the farm on the hopes that she was still alive.
When Eliza and Mattie are walking home from the orphanage on page 188, daisies start falling from the sky and Mattie thinks that they are from Nathaniel. I hope they get to see each other soon! I wonder why he can't come outside?
Mother Smith is just like Mattie's mom I think that they'd get along and so does Mattie, I wonder if they will meet one day in the book I'd like to see what'd happen
I wonder if mother is worried about Mattie because Mattie and grandfather didn't make it to the farm but mother did. I also wonder if Mattie will keep Nell when mother finds out that she took her in.

DeleteDidn't her mother die because she had a bad case of the yellow fever
DeleteWe know she recovered from the fever enough to leave Philidelphia and go looking for Mattie, because Eliza told Mattie that she didn't die. It sounds like Mother went to the farm, but Mattie wasn't there.
DeleteOn page 171 Eliza also mentions that Mother had recovered from the fever when she left.
DeleteNo, not Mattie's mom Colette's mom.....
DeleteOH! Duh, I should have known that.

Deletei don't think she will because of the robbers.
Deletemost likely she will but you never know
DeleteOn page 185, Eliza says, "We are all better off together, that's what I think," which makes me think that, at least for the time being, Mattie is going to stay with Eliza instead of going back home.

ReplyDeleteIt doesn't, but she doesn't speak much. I would guess she's around two years old.
Deleteso that lady that stays with Elizas brother while Eliza is helping people, who is she like what dose she do?

ReplyDeletethat's kind of what i was thinking, i feel like if she goes Mother could be dead or could not even be at the farm...
Deleteoops, I posted this in the wrong spot. This was in answer to Marcelo's question earlier about staying or going.
DeleteI wonder if her mom is still alive I would like to see at least a chapter in the moms point of view.
